One of the hobbies that I enjoy personally in my spare time and even in my spare time is trying open source tools that improve the performance of your system (Windows 10 & Windows 11) and speed it up somewhat, and in the end if I like the tool and find it really useful, I include it in a group I have computer tools and I am sure that I will benefit from them in the future, and why not share them with you so that you can benefit from them as well. This is what I will do in this post, in which I will talk about a special tool called Optimizer.
1 Brief about Optimizer
Optimizer is a free, comprehensive, and open source tool specially programmed to speed up and improve the performance of your Windows device in all versions; From Windows 7 to Windows 11. Not only that, but the Optimizer also helps you achieve maximum privacy on your system that Microsoft violates through its default settings and the sensitive information you share.
Optimizer is a portable tool that does not need to be installed on your device to use it, and its size is very light and does not exceed 2 MB, which means you can carry it with you and use it on any device easily. The next question that might be on your mind right now is, how can Optimizer and other similar tools speed up your device and improve its performance? Isn't the only way to speed up the hardware is to upgrade hardware to higher and better hardware? This is what I will try to answer in the next section.
2 How Optimizer and other tools speed up your device
In fact, there is a way other than upgrading the hardware, which can improve the performance of your device and speed it up significantly, and this method depends entirely on deleting the pre-installed applications that come with the operating system and termed as bloatware, as well as disabling unnecessary services and processes that run in the background all the time and take device resources.
As you know, this is one of the biggest downsides of the Windows system, as it comes loaded with pre-installed applications that you find filling the Start menu and you haven't installed anything yet. These applications are completely useless and are just stuffing companies. The other thing is background services and processes. If you open the Task Manager now, the first thing that will meet you are the processes that are currently running in the background, and you also have the Services tab, which is also running in the background and all of it takes from the device’s resources.
Of course, this does not mean that they are not useful, no, most of them are necessary for the functioning of the operating system, but there are some of them, or let me say a lot of services and background processes that are useless. We disable it to save device resources that are consuming, thus improving and speeding up your device's performance. It's simple and logical, right?
I conclude this part, that my words here are all about free, open-source tools such as Optimizer and ThisIsWin11 and not the programs of companies that claim to clean your device and then charge you large sums of money for nothing and in the end slow down your device because of the extra nonsense that it comes loaded with.
3 Main Features of the Optimizer
The Optimizer is divided into tabs, and each tab brings together options that fall into the same category. In this part, we will discuss all these tabs in general so that you understand how to use the tool, and if you do not understand what an option does, you can place your mouse pointer over that option and an overview will appear to you, and from here you will be informed in advance of the results of taking any step.
- Universal
From here, you can disable some unnecessary services such as: printer services and fax services, as well as disable some unnecessary background processes such as Telemetry services, which send usage and performance data to Microsoft to "improve performance in the future." You also have the option of Enable Performance Tweaks which applies some tweaks to Windows settings that will improve its performance.
- Windows
Depending on the system you are using, you will see a label for this tab (Windows 10, Windows 11, etc.). Here also you will find a lot of tweaks that will speed up your system and improve its performance (Disable Cortana, Uninstall OneDrive...etc) as well as some customizations that you may prefer in terms of privacy if you are a user who cares about privacy a lot, and you also have some customizations related to the user interface .
You may now be wondering about the difference between the Windows tab and the previous tab Universal, both of them do almost the same work and disable additional unnecessary services, processes and features; The difference is clear from the name, Universal contains general modifications for all Windows systems, while the Windows tab, which we said changes according to the system you are using, contains modifications specifically directed to your system version (7, 8, 10, 11).
- UWP apps
From this tab, you can delete all the pre-installed applications (Bloatware) on your Windows system, where you will find a list of all these unwanted applications, choose what you see as unnecessary, then press the Uninstall button and it will be deleted.
Important alert: Beware of deleting everything you find on your way, especially the Windows Store (Microsoft.WindowsStore) because this will prevent you from installing any new application in the future, instead search before in Google for the possibility of deleting the application or package that you want to delete before deleting it from your device. the tool.
- Startup
From this tab, you can see everything that runs automatically with the start of the operating system, including programs, scripts, and more. You may be wondering, what’s the point of knowing this?.. The benefit in short is that you can speed up your Windows startup by disabling what you see as non-essential applications, programs and scripts, and you have below all the tools you need - Delete, Location file - and if not You are sure about deleting an item from the list, you can use the Backup button to backup the entire list and then restore it later via the Restore button if necessary.
- Common Apps
This tab will be useful for all people who still have a recent copy of Windows, meaning that it was not long ago that it was installed on your device. In this tab, you will find a list of all the useful and frequently used computer programs among users, and from here directly you can download what you want and install it quickly without the need To open any links or browsers.
- Cleaner
On this tab you will find everything you need to clean your system disk, all those steps that you had to do manually from deleting temporary files, deleting error reports and emptying the trash, the Optimizer will allow you to do it automatically. Not only that, as you can see in the image above, you will also be able to clean web browsers by clearing cache, cookies, browsing history...etc.
I'd like to point your attention to one thing, a lot of computer cleaning software out there just force you to pay $20-$30 to do these same simple cleaning tasks that simple, free, portable, open source tools like Optimizer can do and that's it.
- Pinger
This tab is somewhat directed to advanced users, and it is related to Internet optimization, as this tab allows you to deal with DNS, you can select which DNS servers are the fastest and most suitable for you, and you can clean the DNS cache.
- Hosts
From here, you can deal and modify the host files on your device, where you can block access to sites and domains that you do not want to be able to access on your device, or you can use the ready-made lists provided by the Optimizer tool that contains thousands of malicious sites spread on the Internet, as well as there A list to block porn sites, a list to block social networking sites.
Note: When I tested the Hosts tab, specifically the ready-made menus, I found that this loads the DNS Client with huge host files with thousands of sites and domains at once. What happened to me is that this was a huge operation that the DNS Client could not bear, and thus led to its sabotage somewhat, including disabling the Internet connection, in addition to the high consumption of the device’s resources to try to deal with this huge operation once, until I had to disable the DNS Client through the command prompt To return the water to its course. Just keep this in mind as you use the Hosts tab options.
- Register
From here you can fix common registry problems that may prevent some important Windows system tools such as Task Manager, Command Prompt, Control Panel and others from working. There is no need to use the tools of this tab if you are not experiencing any problems.
- Hardware
On this tab, useful detailed information about the parts and components of your computer will be displayed, such as knowing the model of the processor and motherboard, the size and type of RAM, the model of the storage unit, whether HDD or SSD, the available storage capacity...etc.
- Integrator
From here, you can modify and customize the right-click menu to suit your requirements. This will help you increase your productivity and quickly access any file, program, tool, or specific command on your system just by adding a shortcut to it on the right-click menu. Use the Add/Modify, Ready Menus, and Run Dialog buttons to add what you want, and use the Remove button to delete what you added previously or to undo the changes.
- Options
The last tab in the tool is Options, through which you can change the language (unfortunately it currently does not support the Arabic language, but we hope in the future that it will be added with an increase in the number of Arab users). You can also change the themes if you don't like the current one (I personally like the default one very much). Also, on this tab you can check for any updates or new versions of the tool, and it is very important that you always use the latest version of the tool. The last option I'd like to bring to your attention is the Reset configuration option, which will act as a "return to default" button.
Important Warning!: If you do not have prior experience with the use of such tools that modify the operating system and disable virtual processes and services that are part of it, I must warn you that this may sometimes lead to problems on the operating system, the nature of these problems is not that The entire operating system crashes, rather its settings that are related to the previous processes and services that you disabled, and here I advise you to create a system restore point before doing anything, and not to try to make many changes at once, and if a problem appears, use the Reset configuration button as an initial step.
Other than this, Optimizer remains one of the distinguished tools that I personally liked, which will really speed up your Windows system and improve its performance in a clear, logical, and effective way, away from the nonsense of "super computer cleaning programs".
